Laddu & Sanātana dharma

know that I am treading on sensitive grounds with multiple fault lines and deep crevasses. This is a sensitive subject and rightfully so.

It is playing around with strong belief and devotions and not to be taken lightly.

There is this group who are alleged to have knowingly or unknowingly allowed adulterated ghee to be used to make the famous Thirumala Thirupati deva Prasadam - the Laddu.

There is that other group which is talking of Sanathana dharma or the eternal faith being either sabotaged or compromised or defiled or  purposely undermined.

While I do not want to sit on judgement on the facts of the matter as I have my own set of beliefs (and hence can be biased), I also  love Prasadam (be it at Thirupati, Sabari malai, Palani, or the prasad given at Mata Vaishno Devi or at Sri Harmandir sahib - Some how more inclined to South Indian temple Prasadam of Puliyogre, kadambam, dadhiyodhanam etc.)

I was just reminiscing of a saying about Sanathana dharma description:

सत्यं ब्रूयात् प्रियं ब्रूयान्न ब्रूयात् सत्यमप्रियम्|

प्रियञ्च नानृतं ब्रूयादेष धर्मः सनातनः|

Satyam brōyāt priyam brōyāt

na brōyāt satyam apriyam,

Priyam cha nanritam brōyāt

eṣha dharmaḥ sanatanah.

In English, it can be translated as …

Speak the truth and speak what is pleasant.

Do not utter (say) an unpleasant truth, and likewise, so not spread / say untruth or a lie just because it sounds pleasant (do not tell a lie to please others).

This is the Sanathana Dharma

Hence the question that arose in my mind was that, how can some persons say an “unpleasant truth” and consider themselves as followers of a Sanathana dharma?

Haven’t they planted agony and guilt in the minds of many faithful and made them feel bad , angry and hurt?

While those who purportedly did this heinous act are culpable aren’t those who “exposed” the “truth” not?

Like I said before, who am I to sit on judgement? But all I can comment is that both are playing with sentiments, faith, beliefs and that’s not right. Mixing religion and politics has always been disastrous to society.

I’m glad that some of the religious heads are coming up with justification that anything taken as part of the divine Prasadam and in good faith has no dosha or is never tainted. We should just say “Sarvam Sri krishnaarpaNamastu” or all that I consume belongs to the lord himself and I dedicate it to that almighty. There should not be any guilt in those who consumed the Prasadam and the matter should be investigated into to find the truth.

Till then, even if it was truth, it need not be uttered and propagated as it is an Apriyam Satyam.

I believe if at all there is great Un-sanātani act happening, it is in all those TV debates where actually the foot prints of truth and untruth can hardly be seen in a muddy and trampled grounds of so called debates and news.

  1. Of course I agree partially with you that religion and politics should not be mixed.
Unfortunately thanks to the political rogues they have conveniently played with the sentiments of Hindus to be in power and amaze wealth for the next 20 generation.
Unfortunately in Bharata the judicial system is also corrupt

Yes it is muddy waters and slippery grounds to tred on. It reminds me of the time when an uncle scolded me for spoiling the mood of about 20 people who were having lunch in his place. I saw a small cockroach in the curry that was served. I was about 11 years old. Shocked I shouted 'Ayyo cockroach!'
Uncle then advised me, it was an accident and you should have just not eaten that curry. Now you have spoiled the mood of the rest who were eating.
It is good some wise people have spoken calmly about the ladu issue.
We could just take it as an act of greed to cheat and the cheats should be black listed.
It is a slippery ground as the country is going overboard on many issues which should have been resolved by discussing. We resort to actions which are not good for the people and the country

That is a huge subject and hopefully we work towards the common good of our people. Not very sure how it will end! Finally we become what we deserve as a country. Not very encouraging though

    1. Yes Nidhi Uncle a good anecdote and a sane advice which is relevant to this day too. Let us stay positive that the justice is served and people are satisfied.
